Grandchildren Visiting…Tips & Oils
When my grandchildren come to visit I make sure I set aside the entire day or weekend just for them. No work, no phone calls, no crazy running around. Just simple time together and fun.
I also make sure I have certain essential oils on hand. Why? Because sometimes…things… just… happen.
Drop off routine…
I love the routine when my son drops their 2 little boys off; Liam is five and Max is three. They are used to wrestling with their Papa, so it’s very active. When he drops them off and they immediately run to the toy room, he calls them back to remind them of the rules he’s given them for Nana’s house.
They come back to the front door and are standing, looking up at him with their big blue eyes and chubby cheeks and my son says; “What are the rules at Nana’s house?” And the boys say in unison…”No wrestling at Nana’s house”. Then they give their Papa a hug and a kiss, say I love you and take off running for the toy room again. It just melts my heart.
Do rules mean accidents or lapse of memory doesn’t happen? Nope. That’s why we have to be prepared.
Tips for a special visit…
Some of the simple things my grandchildren enjoy doing at my house are: Taking turns telling a story. Showing them pictures of their parents when they were younger. Playing simple games like spin the bottle, with things we all have to do like; 5 jumping jacks… give everyone a hug… sing a song together.. pass a treat to everyone (their favorite).
They also love helping me, so I include them in everyday routines and chores like: laundry… setting the table… picking up toys… rearranging things in my house… showing me how to use the iPad…asking for their opinion on decisions I’m trying to make. It makes them feel important and builds their self-confidence.
Let’s just talk…
I remember one time I was babysitting Liam & Max, who were three and one at the time. I had put Max to bed and allowed Liam to stay up a little longer with me. He asked me what I wanted to do next. I told him I was really tired and said, “let’s just talk”. He tilted his head and then smiled this big bright-eyed smile.
He bounced on to the couch and made a spot for me to sit down. He looked up at me and said, “What do you want to talk about Nana?” I told him I wanted to ask questions about him. He liked that. So I asked about his day, his likes and dislikes, friends names etc. He loved it. Then he goes, “okay, my turn”. And he started asking me all the same questions I had just asked him and he listened intently. That is a memory I will cherish forever.
To this day, I love saying to my grandchildren, “let’s just talk” and see the smile on their faces and the excitement as they run for the couch or the bed. Always making a space for me in the middle. Everyone takes turns asking questions, answering and being patient and listening. It can be challenging sometimes, but we are just having fun and they are learning skills that are very important.
Really connect with your grandchildren…
Our grandchildren need us. They want to be emotionally connected with us. We don’t have the hustle and bustle that their parents have right now with trying to raise a family, make a living, run to events and practices, and trying to find personal time. Remember those days? They were tough sometimes.
Our grandchildren like the simplicity with us. Smile, hug, kiss, tickle, read, tell stories, dance, jump, or snuggle. These simple things will bring you closer and leave lasting memories for you and them.
Essential Oil suggestions…
Let’s not forget the occasional stressor that will sometimes come along with children. Whether it’s crabbiness, illness, bumps or bug bites; having essential oils on hand to support their bodies will make it easier on everyone.
When using Young Living Essential Oils with children, you want to dilute the essential oil with a carrier/fatty oil like coconut oil or Young Living’s V-6 oil because the essential oils are so concentrated.
