Sisters…They Know You Best…They Love You Always
I turned 60 this year. I wasn’t thrilled about it at first. I did my best to convince myself it’s just a number. Then I reminded myself… today…is most important and I am blessed in so many ways. One way is by having siblings to share life with.
Sisters…
I have five Sisters. Yes…I said 5. I also have three brother’s. We’ve been through a lot together. The good and the bad. And still, we’re best friends.
My sisters and I get to together a few times each year. Just the girls. We need that time to be ourselves. No brother’s…no husbands…no kids…just girl-time.
We’ve shared toys…rooms…beds…clothes…secrets…cabins…laughs…memories…cocktails… and more. We’ve also hit…pulled hair…pinched…scratched…yelled…called names…tattled..guilt trips…and more.
And yet…with all that in our past…we seem to being getting closer as we get older.
From hiding under beds, to extroverts….
When we were younger, we heard what most kids hear; be nice, be quiet and stay out of trouble. So when we would have company we did that. How…by hiding under the beds and hoping they left soon.
At my Dad’s funeral, my uncle was sitting behind me and he tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around and he said; “Hi Pammy. I didn’t recognize you without the dust-bunnies in your hair.” Hmmm. So that’s how Mom got us to dust under the beds. Smart lady.
Strength and confidence in numbers…
Now when the “six-sisters” go anywhere, we have a tendency to attract attention. Not that we’re loud and obnoxious, it’s just that we have so much fun together. We smile, laugh and tease each other like no one else is around. Grumpy people can sometimes get upset or jealous, because their just grumpy. But most people want to be a part of that. The world craves more smiles and laughter.
We used to go to Playa Del Carmen, (that’s where the picture above was taken in 2007, I’m the third one on the left) and we would visit the same areas each time. The staff would recognize us and with big smiles and their Spanish accent say; “The 6 Seesters are here!!!” They always took special care of us and we loved spending time with them.
Strong family ethic…
We were raised on a farm, taught to work hard and take care of our health. We also had a strong family ethic. Yes, we fought like most siblings, but time seems to have softened those memories and our bond is stronger than ever.
Each of us have very different lives…each of us although we have similarities, are very different. Yet we can finish each other’s sentences…know what each other is feeling…say the same thing at exactly the same time… and then laugh about it in the same way.
As of 2018, our ages range from 54-71 yrs of age. I think we all feel we are in our 30’s and 40’s. Maybe even younger when we are all together. Joy has a way of doing that to your soul.
One thing I do know..I am proud of ALL my sisters. I pray we have many years to make new memories. Hmmm….maybe a cruise would be fun…?
Family time…
What are you doing to keep the family bond strong? If you haven’t talked to a sibling in a long time, do it now! Don’t wait until it’s too late and then be sorry you didn’t pick up the phone to connect.
Life is short…family makes it special. Enjoy them.
