“Grandma”: A Title To Be Proud Of
Kathryn’s first Halloween-2012
I remember being so excited when my oldest daughter Alyssa told me she was pregnant. It was going to be my first grandchild. The thing is, I had no idea just how amazing being a grandmother was going to be.
Love at first sight…
The day I held Alyssa’s little girl Kathryn was the day that my love for my daughter and the love for her daughter all blended into one big mushy, with “all my heart,” kind of love. And it happens every time one of my grandchildren is born. So far I have 4 grandchildren and hopefully more in the future. I mean, really…I gave birth to 4 children, shouldn’t I at least be blessed with 8 grandchildren? That’s not too much to expect, is it?
The payback…
What I didn’t realize about having grandchildren was I would see so much of my own children in them. Sometimes just looking at their kids’ chubby little faces would spark a memory. That independent “no, I do it myself” comment… the guilty look when they got caught doing something they shouldn’t have…those beautiful, innocent and loving eyes that only a child can have…and that deep belly giggle that melts your heart.
It’s always fun to chuckle when my grandchildren do something naughty and I can say: “That’s just like you when you were little!”
“My Grandma”…
What melts my heart is seeing the excitement in Kathryn’s face when I occasionally pick her up at preschool and she announces to anyone that will listen… that’s “My Grandma!” What an amazing title… “My Grandma.”
When Kathryn was younger, she couldn’t pronounce the “r” in Grandma. Instead it came out “Glam-ma.” I liked it. I wished it would have stuck. Especially after I saw this pillow and it defined what Glam-ma meant. I thought, “Yup, that’s me!”
I’ve also found that being a grandparent, I can meet a total stranger, ask if they have grandchildren, and the next thing you know, we are sharing stories and laughing like we’ve been old friends for years. Grandchildren can do that to us. It’s amazing.
Act like an idiot, but get in shape to do it…
So if you are getting close to becoming a grandparent for the first time…don’t let yourself feel old just because of the title; it’s actually the opposite. They bring the kid in you alive again. And you can act like an idiot and get away with it because you’re doing it to entertain your grandchildren. I have to admit though…you do have to be careful. Our minds are “kid-like” again, but our bodies will make you pay for doing things it hasn’t done in 50 years.
I would love to hear…
Has being a grandparent brought a new love and passion for life again? Isn’t it an amazing feeling watching your child take care of their little ones? I think that is such a precious gift. Don’t you?
