Was That You That Helped Me…
What is it that inspired me to start a website/community/business that encourages people to reach out to help others? It’s because of the people from my past that reached out to me in some way during the time I was going through emotional and physical pain. Family, friends and strangers who without them, I’m not sure I would be here.
Was that you…
It’s the girl on the other end of the phone the first time I called in to a domestic abuse hotline that calmly and lovingly kept repeating; “It’s not your fault”. It’s the doctor who wrote on the top of my chart in big letters; “possible victim of abuse”, left the chart open, walked out of the room for 2-3 minutes giving me time to think about if I wanted to confide in him. That gesture of insight and compassion made my respect for him as a doctor increase 100%.
It’s the advocate from the abuse agency who was allowed to come with me to court against my abuser, but was told by the judge she wasn’t allowed to say anything. But after two hours of my abuser, his attorney and his dishonest friend trying to convince the judge that I was lying and a horrible person, she was so pissed off she jumped up, demanded the judge stop the circus and issue the extension on the order-for-protection that we came there for so we could all get out of there. He was shocked, didn’t kick her out and issued the extension.
It’s the elderly gentleman that sensed I was in need, leaned across his wife in church to hand me a hand-carved wooden cross, and a laminated verse called “The Cross In My Pocket”. And then with a loving smile, gently squeezed my hand and told me that everything was going to be okay. It’s the lady in choir who must have seen me crying in church who made her way to me as I was walking out and offered to talk with me. It’s the ladies in the church basement and all the people who donated things so my kids and I could shop for free to give each other gifts that Christmas.
You went beyond just helping after the surgery mistake…
It’s the nurses and physical therapist that kept a close eye on me in the weeks and months after the surgeon made a mistake during a simple surgery and didn’t want to admit it or see me again. It’s the many alternative health care providers that tried to help me regain my strength after being told by medical specialist that I would loose the use of the right side of my body, end up in a wheel chair and on medication the rest of my life.
It’s my sister, who, after telling her that I was severely depressed and in pain 24 hrs a day, offered me some natural products that would support me emotionally and physically. It’s the people who cheered me on as I started to heal and come alive again and started sharing what I had learned to help others.
And it’s my children, who were always there for me. Always loving, accepting and encouraging me.
NEVER underestimate what a simple act of kindness can do…
You… by simply offering a kind gesture with compassion, could impact someone’s life forever. You don’t have to wait until you feel you have healed. You have what it takes to help right now.
What random act of kindness have you done today? What has someone done for you that changed your life in a positive way that they don’t even know? Have you told them? Do it.
I was blessed one time when a lady told me she felt as though I had helped save her life from her abusive husband, just by listening to me speak and suggest a book. That was in 2003 and I’ll treasure that gift of her sharing that with me forever. It made me realize how I, as one person, CAN make a difference. You can make a difference!
